  • A look into Starting 2014 off Successfully

A New Year generally means a new slate to many people. It’s a great time to start fresh, set new goals, and really kick start your organization. Our team at Exact Staff has compiled a list of tips to help start 2014 on the right foot.

    Set Goals.
Even if this is something you haven’t done in the past, make a point to set goals for you and your employees for the upcoming year. Start with yourself and address where you want to be by the end of next year. Do the same thing with your employees. Sit down with each of your employees and talk with them about what they want to achieve in the upcoming year. Next, write down goals to help them reach these achievements. Try breaking the goals into quarterly achievements, making them more realistic and attainable.

    Be Flexible.
It’s hard to be successful as an individual if you aren’t flexible, and it’s certainly not easy as an organization. Listen to feedback from your employees about new ideas and new ways to do things, and do your best to say “yes” instead of “no.” You never know what will happen if you don’t try something new. Flexibility is important to a thriving organization.

Encourage Employees to Join Professional Associations.
This is a great way to start 2014 with your employees, as it shows you care not only about the company but you care about their personal development. Professional organizations provide employees with new tools and skills that often translate to the workplace. When employees feel that their employers are invested in them, they feel a sense of loyalty and pride in their organization.

    Give Back to Your Communities.
The New Year is a great time to find ways to get involved with your local communities and give back.  Your employees will appreciate the opportunity to participate in charitable events and to be a part of a company that puts people and community at the forefront!

    Look to the Future.
What do you see for your organization in the years to come? How are you going to adjust to those changes? It’s important to not only look within a year’s time, but to look years into the future and predict potential strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats and how you will deal with them.

These are just some of the many ways to get your organization started in the New Year. For more ways to jump start 2014, contact one of our recruiters today!

What Do Successful People Have in Common?

As we are nearing the end of 2013, the term “success” is often talked about in the workplace. Bosses want to know how successful their employees were, and employees want to know how they will be rewarded for their success. Throughout the year, many of us set goals for ourselves and when we reach them, that’s how we measure success. Although there are many definitions of success, successful people have a lot in common. Our team at Exact Staff has compiled several of the top characteristics that successful people demonstrate:

They go above and beyond.
Successful people are willing to do more than what’s asked of them. To them, job descriptions are just a starting point of what they can really do with their career. Successful people are willing to take on more challenging tasks as well as doing the tedious work that nobody else wants to do, just to be a team player.

They know they are in charge of their career.
Successful people know that you don’t get randomly lucky and fall into an executive position. They work hard and position themselves for success. Successful people do things each day that make them grow and will better position themselves for recognition in the workforce.

They hold themselves accountable.
Successful people rely on themselves rather than others to get the job done . They leverage their current assets and look inward to find the solution. If they do make a mistake, they own up to it and immediately think of ways to improve next time. Making the same mistake twice isn’t an option for successful people.

They set goals for themselves.
Successful people set focused goals for themselves that are obtainable (albeit sometimes a “stretch”) and aligned with their strengths. They know what they are capable of and do what they can to reach those goals. Also, successful people work to improve their weaknesses.

They are effective communicators.
Successful people can get their message across clearly and concisely. They are confident enough with themselves to make others confident in them, too.

As you wind down for the year, take time to reflect on your successes throughout the year. If  you are looking for more ways to increase your productivity in 2014 contact one of our recruiters today!

Seasonal Temporary Hiring Hits New High

As the holiday season quickly approaches, retailers consistently hire new temporary workers.

According to an annual survey by CareerBuilder on holiday hiring, almost 40-percent of retailers are planning on increasing hiring for the holidays. This number is up from 36-percent from last year.

To the benefit of those temporary workers, the survey also stated that nearly half of employers hiring seasonal workers plan to transition them to permanent staff.

Department stores and home centers post the most job ads, and here’s a quick snapshot of the other industries with the most demand:

  • Department Stores (except Discount Department Stores) +64.2%
  • Home Centers  +11.9%
  • All Other Merchandise Stores +17.5%
  • Supermarkets and Other Grocery (except Convenience) Stores  +117.8%
  • Automotive Parts and Accessories Stores  +51.8%

It’s important to note that it’s not just retailers who are hiring. Shipping companies such as UPS and FedEx are also hiring up to 50,000 seasonal temporary workers. The most popular job openings include:

  • Retail Salespersons
  • First-Line Supervisors of Retail Sales Workers
  • Cashiers
  • Customer Service Representatives
  • Stock Clerks
  • Merchandise Displayers and Window Trimmers
  • Sales Representatives, Wholesale and Manufacturing
  • Pharmacy Technicians
  • First-Line Supervisors of Office and Administrative Workers
  • Software Developers and Information Technology employees

For those of you applying to these jobs in hopes that they will turn into a permanent position, there are certain things you can do to remain at the top of your employer’s list:

  • Apply early. The majority of employers will stop accepting applications by the end of October, so make sure to get yours in on time.
  • Provide excellent customer service. Once you have the job, be proactive about providing great customer service such as asking customers for help before they ask you.
  • Go above and beyond. If you want to turn this into a permanent position, ask the employer for more responsibility and offer up ideas for improvement.
  • Let the employer know you are interested in staying. When you let the employer know up front that you want this to become a permanent position, it keeps you at the top of their mind and allows them to watch and see how well you do during the temporary time frame.

Overall, the increase in seasonal temporary hiring is good news for both employers and employees.

Exact Staff has been recognized as an Inc. 5000 fastest growing privately-held company in the United States. If you are looking for more information on seasonal hiring, contact one of our recruiters today!

Will the Affordable Care Act Be a Blessing or a Curse for Small Businesses?

Talk of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) is everywhere, and if you’re a small business you may be concerned about what the future holds. Implementation of the ACA has been in stages starting in 2013 and 2014. Our team at ExactStaff has compiled the key provisions of the ACA, and what it will mean for your small business.

  • Small Business Health Care Tax Credits.
These credits are there to help small businesses afford the cost of healthcare for their employees. In 2014, small businesses that have fewer than 25 full-time employees and pay average annual wages under $50,000 will get a credit up to 50-percent to offset the costs of health insurance premiums for their employees.
  • Small Business Health Options Program.
On average, small businesses may pay 18-percent more than big businesses for health insurance due to administrative costs. This new health options program gives employers more options for high-quality coverage at a lower cost.
  • Summary of Benefits and Coverage Disclosure Rules.
This provision states that employers are required to provide employees with a standard Summary of Benefits and Coverage form explaining what their plan covers and what it costs. It’s designed to help employees better understand and evaluate their health insurance options.
  • 90-Day Maximum Waiting Period.
Starting in 2014, employees who are eligible for health care through their small businesses are no longer required to wait 90 days to begin coverage.
  • Workplace Wellness Programs.
This provision provides incentives to small businesses who promote wellness programs and encourages employees to lead healthier lifestyles. For example, these programs provide rewards to individuals who meet a specific standard related to their health such as not smoking. Starting in 2014, small businesses who utilize a wellness program are eligible for a reward that’s 30-percent of the cost of health coverage. For programs that are specifically designed to decrease and prevent tobacco use, the reward can be up to 50-percent.

These provisions for small businesses are just some of many that are part of the Affordable Care Act. Note that some of these are already in effect, while others will take place starting January 1, 2014. All of the information regarding how the ACA effects small businesses can be found here, but for more information on what this means for your small business, contact us today!

Staffing Agencies Employed 3 Million People per Day in Quarter 3 of 2013

As we all know, today’s job market is still a tough one for job seekers. No matter the industry, many people are struggling to find steady employment. Luckily, there are viable options for those looking to find a new career – one of the best is to utilize a staffing company. A staffing company works hard for candidates to place them with organizations that are looking to hire. Recruiters at the staffing agency work with human resources and other departments in an organization to ensure that candidates are a good fit.

In fact, according to a recent survey by the American Staffing Association, US staffing companies employed an average of three million temporary and contract employees per day from July through September of 2013. This number is up almost 3-percent from last year’s third-quarter results.

President and CEO of the American Staffing Association, Richard Wahlquist, stated, “The staffing industry is proud of the role it played in providing employment opportunities to increasing numbers of U.S. workers during the past quarter.” Well, they should be! This number is huge and impacts millions of people.

There are other services that staffing companies offer besides job placement. These services include career counseling, resume preparation, and career-related workshops and seminars. Many job seekers don’t know about these services, but they can be crucial in getting a job.

This same survey also stated that temporary and contract staffing sales totaled 27 billion dollars from July through September of 2013. This number is also up almost 3-percent from the same time period as last year.

So what does this mean for you as a job seeker? It means take full advantage of the staffing services available to you. As we mentioned before, there are more people applying for one open position than ever before and the staffing service you chose will be your resource for helping you become the candidate of choice. Exact Staff has been helping 10’s of thousands of candidates for almost 20 years find exceptional opportunities for themselves, their friends, family members and other referrals.  We are proud that we have helped generations find excellent careers.
