Today’s LA Times featured an article about the unusual antics and questions that some companies are using to hire their talent. I’ve included the list of oddball interview questions that were included as well as the top reasons applicants made poor impressions during their interviews.

Oddball questions:

Name five uses for a stapler, without the staples

What is 37 times 37?

Are you exhaling warm air?

Room, desk or car-which do you clean first?

How would you get an elephant into a refrigerator?

Would Gandhi have made a good software engineer?

What do you think of garden gnomes?

Please spell “diverticulitis”

How many planes are currently flying over Kansas?

Does life fascinate you?

Reason applicants made poor impressions:

Answered cellphone during interview

Dressed inappropriately

Appeared uninterested

Spoke negatively about a current or previous employer

Chewed gun

Didn’t provide specific answer

Didn’t ask good questions

The GREAT news is that we are seeing getting busier and busier in ALL of our offices! There are great jobs and excellent companies out there so now is the time to get serious about that career search. We’ll be there every step of the way to guide you through the maze of questions and interviews and be your advocate to get that job! And the most oddball question we hope to ask you is “when can you start??!!!”

Be sure to refer your friends, family, neighbors and anyone who wants a terrific career. Thank you for following us on Twitter, Facebook and LIKING us!

Let’s face it, anything that can make your life easier and more productive is a welcome addition! I’ve come to rely on several apps that I know have been great tools for me so let me share my top five with you:

DropBox– functions as an online backup and file storage tool. You can use it to share large files and grant conference attendees access to powerpoint presentations.

Dragon Dictation – this app for your iPhone let’s you speak a memo and have it converted to text. Sometimes it may miss a word but it’s a definite time saver. You can then e-mail your text.

Hello Fax – allows you to receive a document like an agreement or contract that needs edits or a signature. You just download the document, upload to HelloFax, make your edits, add your stored signature and e-mail it back – done!

Text Expander – I use certain text often and Text Expander lets me write large copy once and then paste that copy whenever I need it with just a couple of key strokes. A real time saver and mitigates errors in typing and re-typing.

Transmit – A file transfer tool that lets you move files around in your laptop as well as uploading and managing files via FTP to your website.

With all the time you save, you can visit OUR website and let us help you find a great new career opportunity – or refer your friends. We are busy and would WELCOME your call!!

As we all take a minute of reflection to remember the events that shaped our lives in the year 2011 and as we anticipate with excitement what can be in 2012, I invite you to take a moment to watch a recent Diane Sawyer interview with Gaby Gifford. You may know of her as the congresswoman who was shot in the brain in a senseless act of violence. I am sharing this beautiful story in its entirety(41 minutes) because I think it’s a testament for all of us who are building our lives, helping the economy, contributing to our communities and doing everything we can to bring out the best in ourselves and all those we touch in our daily lives. It’s a message that with love, support, positive attitudes, and hard work, there is no limit to what can be achieved by any individual.

I was talking to a candidate in our lobby this morning and I asked to see her resume. She had terrific experience, exceptional skills and I have NO DOUBT that we will be placing her in a terrific career. BUT, I asked her to remove 3 things from her resume to give her the best possible opportunity to be considered by our clients. These included:

Removing her picture from the resume. It was small, professional looking and still not appropriate. It’s discriminatory to make a decision about hiring you based on your appearance anyway, so there is no relevance in including a photo. Additionally this is valuable space for you to include further skills and history information that SHOULD get you the job!

Deleting her hobbies/old work history. Her job at a retail store when she was in high school was unnecessary compared to the 14 years of career experience that she obtained since that time. Removing that early job gave her more white space to add pertinent info. on more current experience. Sharing her hobby of sky diving, while pretty darn cool, would not convince her possible employer that she is the appropriate accounting candidate for them.

Take out the infamous last line “References available upon Request.” In today’s job market, it is expected that you will furnish references and that you have them lined up and ready to go BEFORE they’re requested.

Don’t give up on your job quest! Companies are hiring, the economy will bring new opportunities and you can find a great job with the right support and tools. Please visit us at www.exactstaff.com so we can help you in your quest for the EXACT career you’re seeking! And send a friend our way too!

This is my first blog as the owner and CEO of Exact Staff. I’m excited to share the insights of our staffing team, our associates and our amazing client base with all of you.

In today’s economy our staffing teams are seeing some of the most talented and gifted job seekers we’ve seen in years! Why is it that one job seeker gets a position over another, equally qualified candidate? We’ve noticed that candidates who are confident, positive and see themselves as a problem-solver for an employer (vs. simply a “job-seeker”) are more likely to land the job.

Remember that every business is looking for the experience, skills and talents that can help them solve their problems. When you do the research and investigation on your targeted “companies of choice” be sure to identify issues and challenges that business or industry faces and determine how your skills and capabilities can turn you into the problem-solver they need. You have something to offer rather than needing something from that business. YOU ARE A VALUABLE RESOURCE that needs to be added to the team!

Let us help you identify your strengths and get you into the right mindset to get that career you deserve. For more info. and a chance to chat with us, come see us at www.exactstaff.com.
